About the Gloria Watts-Cox Foundation
The Gloria Watts-Cox Foundation was founded in November 2002, by Lee H. Cox in loving memory of his wife, Gloria Watts-Cox. In 1976, when Gloria first started showing some of the signs of having
Lymphedema, many of the doctors she consulted with were baffled by her symptoms, and because of that, she went a long time without being diagnosed with the disease. She began to gain weight despite being on a 900-calorie-a-day diet. She tried many different ways to lose weight, and remained very active; often riding her bicycle and walking Stone Mountain with no difficulty. She and her husband loved to travel and have fun and did so often, despite the changes the Lymphedema was causing in Gloria's body.
In 1983, after having an operation caused by other medical problems, other complications developed. She had pneumonia for four years in a row and had many diagnostic tests After an injection she received in her foot in the midst of all these diagnostics, Gloria's foot swelled and never returned to normal. Gloria still managed to remain active in her church and with children. In the early part of 1990, the swelling in her leg began to progress. She had to make a medical leave of absence from her teaching job, and was unable to return. Gloria's battle with Lymphedema ended in February 2002. The purpose of the Gloria Watts-Cox foundation is to raise funds and awareness that will help to support those suffering from the disease that Gloria left behind.
The mission of the Gloria Watts-Cox Foundation, Incorporated is to help support financially, spiritually, and emotionally, persons with diseases that are hard to diagnose and may be in need of non-conventional treatments. The foundation's focus is placed on patients dealing with diseases of the Lymph Glands.
